Blue Jays are a fairly common bird seen here in Ontario, in Canada, during the winter months,

and last week in Algonquin Park, Bob and I were blown away by their sheer numbers.

At one location, a group of Blue Jays flitted about a small supply of sunflower seeds, quite boisterous in their attempts to ward off others elbowing their way in for a chance at a few seeds.  As the birds landed and took off in quick succession, their fluttering wings fanned the delicate flakes that rose like soft plumes of smoke.

At least two dozen Blue Jays were gathered in the pine trees surrounding the area, and they put on quite a show!

There was a constant ebb and flow of these strikingly blue birds as they worked to snatch up all the seeds.  With wings spread wide, the Blue Jays whirled and dipped, their feathers skimming the snowbank like ballroom gowns brushing across a dance floor.  They were very entertaining!
