Located in Gros Morne National Park, The Tablelands in Newfoundland are actually a section of the Appalachian Mountains that was once molded by glacial ice into a flat-topped plateau now called the Long Range Mountains.  It is a unique geological landscape often compared to that of the planet Mars. Amherst Island is situated in Lake Ontario near Kingston, and for at least a couple of years, Bob and I had intended to visit it.  The intention was to photograph birds of prey that winter there.  Our explorations were enriched by of a healthy population of White-tailed Deer that casually foraged in different areas. The Wonders of Ark in the Park at Waitakere Ranges, New Zealand

After leaving Muriwai and the Gannet colony, Bob and I planned to make a stop at Ark in the Park en route back to our lodgings. Ark in the Park is a conservation area of note in the Waitakere Ranges Regional Park of Auckland. Situated in Cascade Kauri Park, it is where concerted efforts are being made to restore the ecology of the area to its natural state. Read more

Baker’s Brook Falls is situated in Gros Morne National Park in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador.  It is actually a series of three waterfalls that tumble over three successive limestone ridges underlying Baker’s Brook.  The middle set of cascades, seen here, are the most impressive. Having left Cerro de San Juan Ecological Reserve behind us in Tepic, Bob determined that there were still sufficient daylight hours to make a stop and go hiking near La Bajada.  The coffee and banana plantations in that area promised good birding habitat, and it wouldn’t be too far off our route back to San Blas. As Bob and I made our way into the Main Pavilion at Skukuza Rest Camp to sign up for a guided night safari in Kruger National Park, South Africa, our mission was interrupted when a flicker of yellow drew our eyes to a nearby palm tree.  We were delighted to see a beautiful Lesser Masked Weaver dangling upside down from a stiff palm frond.
