Goldenrod Crab Spider – Messenger From Another World

It is not often that we get to see a Goldenrod Crab Spider here in Ontario, Canada. Legend has it that these white spiders are messengers from another world. The indigenous people in Canada believe that white spiders are linked to wisdom and creation.

Some people are terrified of spiders, fearful of their painful kiss. But spiders are one of the most important creatures we can have living in our gardens.

Fortunately, Bob and I were not concerned about being bitten by this Goldenrod Crab Spider because its bite is not dangerous to humans. More interestingly is that these spiders can change colour to match the flowers around them. 

These spiders have very long front appendages that can swiftly catch anything landing in front of them.  Bees, wasps, and butterflies are potential targets.

Next time you are in the garden, take a look for spiders.  Maybe you’ll be lucky and discover a Goldenrod Crab Spider pretending to be a flower.
