Red Fox Moment
Usually foxes donโt live near well-travelled roads, but in Algonquin Park in Ontario, Canada, it is very common to see a Red Fox or other wildlife in the ditches or sauntering along the highway.
During a visit to the Park in the summer of 2025, Bob and I had occasion to spot an adult Red Fox sitting on the shoulder of the road, but this time, the Fox had its kit in tow.
Fortunately, unlike its parent, the young Red Fox was high on a raised rocky embankment.
As we watched the Foxes, a steady stream of cars and trucks sped by us even as we waved, asking them to slow down. Many people have been seriously injured in Algonquin Park from hitting wild animals. As Ontario Parks says, “Itโs not just humans at risk. Speeding in parks increases road mortality for our wildlife and can have devastating consequences for species at risk.”
Without a doubt, as Ontario Parks says, “Saving a few seconds of driving time is not worth risking the lives of other visitors or wildlife,” or in this case a Red Fox.
The kit was lingering behind driven by its curiosity.
At one point, the adult Fox cast a backward glance as it waited for its offspring to catch up.
After a few minutes, to our relief, the pair of Red Foxes mounted a massive sloping rock in Algonquin Park and headed off into the safety of the bush.
