It had been planned months ahead when we announced our plans to visit Bob’s sister on Vancouver Island. She and her husband, Martin, had kayaked around Vargas Island before and were eager to initiate us to the rigours of ocean kayaking. Read more
Our last morning in Newfoundland started out sunny with scattered clouds. After packing up our belongings and having breakfast, Bob and I took one last spin up to Signal Hill. It seemed fitting that we should end our journey where we began, and given its historical significance, Signal Hill deserved another visit. Read more
On our first morning in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Canada, Bob and I woke to find brighter skies than the previous afternoon and we decided to take a hike to Signal Hill. Numerous colourful ships had arrived in the harbour during the night including freighters, coast guard and trawlers. Read more
How exciting it would be to discover a waterfall deep in a tropical rainforest, a cascade where one can enjoy a refreshing dip in a plunge pool while mist wraps around your shoulders. Well, hidden among the lush jungle of Costa Rica is one such spot, the La Fortuna Waterfall in Alajuela Province. Read more

When Bob and I set off from Cape Point at the Cape of Good Hope in South Africa in search of the distant stretch of glistening white sand seen from the lookout, we were in for a big surprise and a treat when we spotted a small herd of bonteboks. Read more
Receiving word that access to the Tongariro Alpine Crossing was once again forbidden owing to risky conditions, Bob and I had our last day in Mt. Tongariro National Park, New Zealand, wide open. The morning looked promising with sun shining brightly when we awoke at our lodgings, at Creel Lodge. Read more
After the previous day’s long hike at Arenal Observatory, Bob and I decided to indulge in a leisurely drive and go a little further afield from La Fortuna to see the Miravalles Volcano in Costa Rica. Read more
With winds predicted between 85-95 kilometres/hour on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing in New Zealand, our plans for the day were dashed. The pass was deemed too dangerous to allow access to hikers, so Bob and I resorted to our alternate plan. We drove back to Huka Falls in Wairakei Park. Read more
After visiting Boulder Beach on our day’s excursion from Cape Town, South Africa, it was decided to push on to the legendary Cape of Good Hope. Only known to me through history lessons in grade school, the Cape of Good Hope instilled a sense of wonder in me. I could hardly wait to see it! Read more
