Late one fall, Bob and I were out looking for a reported Great Horned Owl in the forest along the east shore of the Rouge River in Markham, Ontario, when we came upon a bottle lying along the shore’s edge. This bottle caught our eye because we could clearly see that it had a message inside. Whoever set this bottle afloat made sure it was watertight and waterproof. Although not swept out to sea, this letter was set adrift by the messenger with hopes that it would be found someday on Markham’s Rouge River. And indeed, it has been found!! Read more

Bob and I were hiking along a small creek called Duffin’s Creek, in Markham, Ontario, Canada. As the sun was sinking lower and time was getting on, we were making our way back towards the trailhead when Bob’s eye suddenly registered an usual silhouette in a tree when he glanced to the right. Northern Saw-Whet Owl We Sighted In Toronto
Bob and I went for a walk one afternoon in Milliken Park, here in Toronto, Ontario, and by chance, we spotted a Northern Saw-Whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) at rest in the thick brush. I had never seen an owl in the wild before, and certainly not one in such close proximity. We have frequented this park for years, and this was the first time we were lucky enough to catch sight of an owl. Read more

Fall Colors at Algonquin Park and Oxtongue Lake 2012
We took a drive up from Toronto, Ontario on October 1, 2012, to checkout the fall colors in the Algonquin Park and Oxtongue Lake areas. From atop the Dorset tower, the view of the color sure proved the drive worthwhile. According to the local people with whom we spoke, this was the best fall color seen in this area in 10 years.
